Hurricane Allen was a powerful Cape Verde-type hurricane which struck southern Texas. It was the first and strongest hurricane of the 1980 Atlantic hurricane season and one of the strongest hurricanes in recorded history.

Hurricane Allen was a powerful Cape Verde-type hurricane which struck southern Texas. It was the first and strongest hurricane of the 1980 Atlantic hurricane season. The first named storm and first tropical cyclone of the 1980 Atlantic hurricane season, it was one of the strongest hurricanes in recorded history, one of the few hurricanes to reach Category 5 status on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale on three separate occasions, and spent more time as a Category 5 than any other Atlantic hurricane.

The Hurricane passed north of the Cayman Islands,  causing serious damage on the 6 August 1980 to the islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman with winds of 155 mph

RFA Green Rover which was in the area was deployed on 7 August 1980 to provide humanitarian assistance to the peoples and infrastructure of these two islands under the operational name of Operation Allen
